What MOQ Can You Really Get for Ceramic Tableware?
MOQ for ceramics is kiln economics, not stubbornness. A kiln car is loaded once regardless of how many pieces sit on it, so the question is never "can the factory count lower" but "what fills the car". Know that, and the typical numbers stop feeling arbitrary: stock programs around 500 pieces per SKU, custom programs typically 1000–3000.
Four things decide your ceramic tableware MOQ.
- Mold and shape. A shape already in production borrows an existing mold and an existing rhythm. A new shape needs mold development and slower early runs, so it earns a higher MOQ.
- Glaze color. Stock white glazes run continuously. A custom glaze is batch-tinted for your order, and a tinting batch below a viable size wastes material and risks tone drift — the main reason custom colors push the minimum up.
- Decoration. Existing decal or underglaze patterns add little. New artwork means decal setup or hand-paint line balancing, priced and batched accordingly.
- Packaging. Printed boxes and inserts are themselves printed goods with their own minimums — a custom retail box can set the real MOQ before the porcelain does.
Stock at 500, custom typically 1000–3000 — per SKU.
The figures below are typical example levels for planning, quoted per SKU at order time. They come from how kilns are actually loaded, not from negotiation theater.
| Example SKU | Program type | MOQ (typical) |
|---|---|---|
| FC-DW-01 — Everyday White 16-Piece Dinnerware Set | Stock body, stock white glaze | 500 pcs |
| FC-DW-02 — Reactive Glaze Stoneware 12-Piece Set | Stock shape, reactive glaze band | 500 pcs |
| FC-DW-03 — Underglaze Blue Series (28 pieces) | Decoration line, wholesale program | 1000 pcs |
| FC-DW-04 — Bone China Gold-Rim 56-Piece Set | Custom gift program | 1000 pcs |
| FC-DW-05 — Hotel Premium Porcelain Line (24 pieces) | HoReCa reinforced body | 1000 pcs |
| FC-TW-01 — Celadon-Glaze Gongfu Tea Set (8 pieces) | Stock teaware | 500 pcs |
MOQ levels shown are typical example values for planning; the binding number is confirmed per SKU in your quotation. Full custom developments sit at the upper end of the 1000–3000 range.
Unit price moves in steps, not in a straight line.
Buyers sometimes expect a smooth per-piece discount curve. Ceramic cost steps down in stages as fixed costs amortize — the shape of the curve below is illustrative, and each step is confirmed in your quotation.
| Order stage | What dominates unit cost | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Samples and trial pieces | Sampling fee and courier freight — not a production price reference | Decide fast; rounds cost weeks, not just fees |
| First full run at MOQ | Body, firing and setup amortized over the smallest viable kiln load | Highest production unit price you should expect |
| Repeat runs | Glaze batches and decoration lines reach steady rhythm | This is where the first real step-down lands |
| Volume runs | Kiln car utilization and packing efficiency maximize | Further step-downs trade against your inventory and cash |
Illustrative structure for planning discussions, not a price commitment. The economics behind these steps are expanded in MOQ economics for ceramics.
MOQ questions buyers ask us.
Can I negotiate a lower MOQ for ceramic tableware?+
Sometimes, through structure rather than pressure: stick to an existing shape and stock glaze, accept a stock packaging option, or let the factory consolidate your order into a mixed kiln load. What does not work is asking a factory to fire a half-empty car at a volume price — the economics simply do not close.
Why does a custom glaze color raise the MOQ so much?+
A custom color is a tinting batch: frits and pigments are weighed and milled for your order alone. Below a viable batch size, material is wasted and tone drifts between runs — which is exactly the inconsistency your golden sample discipline exists to prevent. Larger batches protect the color, not the factory.
Should a first order be stock or custom?+
Most buyers should prove the market on a stock program near 500 pieces per SKU, then move to custom runs typically at 1000–3000 once reorder data exists. Custom identity is worth paying for when demand is proven — not before.
